Audit Google Tag Manager containers

What is Google Tag Manager?

Google Tag Manager is a tag management software, that helps marketers implement analytics solutions and marketing technologies ("martech") without needing to touch the source code of their site. It runs in the visitor browser, dynamically injecting martech code snippets ("tags"), that use custom data and contextual information ("variables") and that get fired based on conditions ("triggers") defined by the tracking specialist in GTM.

How to audit a container with tagstack.io

Auditing a container with tagstack.io is just a matter of using the scanner to search for a URL or a GTM Container ID. Tagstack.io offers different panels with different pruposes to help with you container inspection.

Container Health

The container health report provides you with an audit score for the quality of the GTM setup. The score is calculated by averaging the score obtained ona serie of audits, that are performed automatically when the container gets scanned.

Example: Airbnb health container score

Martech summary

The Martech Summary reports gives you an exhaustive list of every vendor identified in the container. Tagstack.io also scans specific GA4 features, highligting if GA4 enhanced measurement has been enabled and which ones, for instance. Vendors inserted as Custom HTML are also identified.

Inspect and export container

The final report is the inspect and export, which lets you browse through the container as if you were in Google Tag Manager. It provides an overview of the container key properties, like the tags, triggers and variables count, whether GTM Server-Side or Consent Mode has been enabled and which CMP is active. You can then navigate through the different container entities by clicking on each one and inspecting their setup and configuration.

The "Export container" lets you export the configuration as a GTM compatible JSON, that you can later on re-import in Google Tag Manager through the import feature. It is useful if you lost access to your GTM container, or if you want to start working on the container before getting access to it. It also gets useful if you're simply more at ease with using the GTM interface instead of tagstack's one.
